We’re Not Overeating—We’re Undermoving

It’s no secret: Over the last 50 years, Americans’ overall caloric intake has skyrocketed. Portion sizes at home and in restaurants have increased—as has sugar consumption. However, a new study by the Stanford School of Medicine contradicts the popular belief that overeating is the primary culprit related to societal obesity. The study shows that the bigger problem isn’t that we’re eating more—it’s that we’re exercising a lot less.

The 22-year study, which surveyed Americans from 1988 to 2010, revealed that a lack of exercise is likely the true culprit to our weighty woes. In 2010, 52% of women admitted to not getting physical exercise, while 44% of men revealed they live mostly sedentary lives. In 1994, by comparison, only 19% of women and 11% of men weren’t exercising. These numbers line up all too well with obesity rates, which have surged over the same time period from 25% to 35% in women and 20% to 35% in men.

There’s a clear take-away from this study: most of us could benefit from more mobility in our lives.
