Walking Offers Same Health Benefits as Running
A recent study found that brisk walking offers many of the same health benefits as running. Findings released in the American Heart Association journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology show that quick walking and running were equally effective in lowering an individual’s risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and possibly coronary heart disease.
Researchers analyzed 33,060 runners in the National Runners' Health Study and 15,045 walkers in the National Walkers' Health Study. They found that equivalent energy expenditure provided equivalent health benefits – whether the exercise intensity was moderate (walking) or vigorous (running).
