Personal Trainer Spotlight: Jim Young

Area Servicing: Servicing the MetroWest, MA area.

Experience: In his nearly thirty-year career, Jim has held certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine, been a Titlelist Certified Golf Fitness Instructor and is currently pursuing a CrossFit Trainer certification.

At Gym Source, we value the expertise of personal trainers. That’s why we regularly spotlight local trainers who have a passion for fitness. This month we are featuring Jim Young, owner and trainer at Black Mountain Sports, a company that has focused on designing, outfitting and staffing fitness centers for private country clubs in the metro-west Boston area. Recently, due to increased demand from clients outside these private settings, he has expanded his services to include home visits and private gym consultations/design to a select group of clients who wish to increase/maintain their level of fitness.

When asked his fitness philosophy Jim explained,

“my passion is to help my clients live active lives well into their seventies and eighties. Too often, I see people slowly give up doing activities they love because of a gradual deconditioning process. My goal is to give my clients the tools and guidance to slow, or hopefully reverse this process through exercise. I accomplish this by helping clients achieve and maintain proper functional movement, balance, flexibility and strength.”

You could hear the passion in Jim’s voice as he went on to explain his favorite success story. At 60, a Harvard professor, nationally ranked senior squash player, rower, and backcountry skier approached Jim with this challenge: ‘keep me in the game, as long as you can.’

Now, 16 years later, this long-term client may have slowed down a bit, but has enjoyed a near injury free 16 years of recreational sporting and has had to continually seek younger competitors to play squash, golf, row and ski with.

However, the best part of this success story is that he still has the physical abilities to enjoy all these recreational activities with his kids and grandkids. You could hear Jim smiling as he explained, “that is why I go to work every day.”

When asked his favorite piece of training equipment, Jim chuckled, “anything you’re actually going to use regularly.” Our equipment experts would second that.

He went on to explain that functional fitness has become an industry buzzword but not without good reason. “I cannot stress enough the importance of good posture, balance, strength and flexibility. These things will have a direct impact on your ability to live an active and healthy life.” Whether the exercise is as simple as getting in and out of a chair without using your hands or as advanced as complex weight training, his clients must first master the mechanics of the movement consistently before increasing speed, resistance or intensity.

When asked how he stays fit, he said you’ll most likely find him at CrossFit, working out with his teenage daughters.
