Minimalist Running Shoes—Fad or Fantastic?

With a lower heel and sole than traditional running shoes, minimalist running shoes offer a totally different running experience. So what’s the attraction? With minimalist running shoes, your feet are parallel to the ground, which changes your ‘footstrike’ – the part of your foot that hits the ground first as you run—which for some runners means fewer injuries. In fact, a 2012 study by the U.S. Army Medical Department Journal found that barefoot and minimalist shoe wearers reported three times fewer injuries and a more anterior footstrike than runners with traditional running shoes, which some experts believe reduces overall joint stress.
