Got what it takes to be a trainer?

When U.S. News and World Report published its 2015 “Top Jobs” rankings, careers in health and wellness led the list. In fact, of the top 10 professions listed, seven were specific to health care.

Can you inspire success?

As a personal trainer, you’ll be responsible for helping all types of clients—with widely different attitudes toward fitness—stay focused and reach their goals. Some will be crunched for time; some will easily get off-track. Your key job throughout their journey will be to “listen, educate and motivate” regardless of the challenges they bring. At the end of the day, no matter who walks through your door, the time effort it takes to help them see real results will be worth it.

Can you deal with data?

Helping clients achieve their fitness goals requires constant planning and workout customization—and that begins with data. Your job will be to establish their fitness level, screen for movement and mobility, baseline their workout, and benchmark their progress along every step of the way.

That means you’ll be tracking your clients’ data at every session, evaluating their progress, and adjusting strategies along the way. If all that data and evaluation sounds tedious, remember that it’s your primary proof of success.

Can you keep up with trends?

Your clients will be constantly influenced by the trends they see—like Zumba, P90X, indoor cycling, CrossFit and more. Your job will be to stay current not only with new fitness trends, but also with the research that either backs up (or blows apart) their promises and claims. Plus, staying on top of trends keeps your workouts fresh, and keeps your clients having fun.

Can you lead by example?

Your clients will see you as their fitness role model. When you show up looking healthy and feeling energetic, your clients will do the same. Plus, keep in mind that you’ll need to demonstrate proper exercise techniques for your clients to maintain safety and proper form. (Not to mention demonstrating machines—your clients may have never seen a Cybex Bravo functional trainer or Hoist PTS, and they’ll need your guidance to begin.)
