The benefits of short bursts of high intensity exercise—also called ‘exercise snacking’—has supporters and skeptics. Now there’s a new study in its favor. New research published 2/1/13 in The Journal of Physiology found that yes, you can get fit in short bursts of exercise. Scientists at Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Birmingham sought to replace traditional endurance training with two types of interval training: High intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Sprint Interval Training (SIT). The researchers found that three sessions of HIIT or SIT over 90 minutes per week, were as effective as five sessions of traditional endurance exercise over five hours per week.
This study is more comprehensive than previous interval training research, and could be good news for people who want to stay fit despite a busy schedule.
