Benefits of Combining Cardio & Strength Training

Utilizing both cardio and strength training exercises in your workouts is the best way to elevate your workouts and to live a healthier, fitter lifestyle.

To start maximizing your workouts, it is important first to understand the different types of exercise:

  • Aerobic Exercise: Also known as cardio, is any sustained exercises, such as running, rowing, swimming, or cycling, that stimulates and strengthens the heart and lungs, and improves the body’s delivery of oxygen throughout your body.
  • Strength Exercise: Physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance and muscular contraction to build the strength and size of skeletal muscles.

So, why is important to marry the two types to create the most efficient and effective workouts? Because proper weight training will increase the strength and endurance of your muscles, which will improve your cardiovascular capacity. In turn, when you gain muscle, it raises your metabolic rate, which helps you burn more calories and fat faster.

How do you determine the right mix of cardio and strength training to optimize your workouts?

First, determine your goals and which “category” you fall into.
(1) Appearance: Do you want to improve your appearance? Specifically, are you looking to get more toned, build more muscle or less weight?
(2) Performance: Do you fall in the performance category, where your priority is to improve your overall health or improve on a personal goal like running for longer durations or setting a PR in your next race?

Obviously these categories overlap, and training for one goal will have you seeing results in other areas. But, strategizing the right exercise mix of cardio and strength training is the best way to optimize your overall workouts to reach your fitness goals. It may even be beneficial to consider multifunctional fitness equipment that works double duty.
