If there were an award for ‘Too Good to be True,’ it may just go to Fila USA™’s Toning Resistance Tight Capri exercise pants for women. Fila claimed the toning pants enhance the efficiency of your workout. But can a pair of pants provide a “50% increase in muscle workouts” as Fila claims? The American Council on Exercise (ACE) worked with the experts at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to evaluate Fila’s claims.
The subjects walked on a treadmill—first wearing toning pants, and then wearing regular shorts. Researchers monitored participants’ heart rate, VO2 and ratings of perceived exertion, as well as measured muscle activity related to the gluteus maximus, biceps femoris and vastus lateralis. After analyzing the data, there was no significant difference in terms of heart rate or muscle activation. That said, ACE gave Fila’s toning pants claims a big thumbs-down.
